We're reminded that life is fragile today.
by To Write Love On Her Arms. on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 12:32pm

We're reminded that life is fragile today. We're reminded the power of choice, the choices of others and certainly our own. We hold the power to choose love and grace and kindness, and we hold the power to choose hate and terror and murder as well. We saw this in Norway today, in the unthinkable tragedy there. Our hearts are more than heavy for the people of Norway and our prayers are for the loved ones of the many killed. We are sorry beyond words and we stand with you today. And we say the lives mattered. Your friend. Your sister. Your neighbor. Your son. Their life mattered. Their story mattered.

And then with the news of the death of Amy Winehouse, we pause to say and remember that Amy was a person. She was more than a voice, more than a star, more than an addict. She was somebody's daughter, somebody's friend. Our hearts are heavy for her loved ones today.

Amy's death reminds us that addiction is real, that it has stolen the lives of thousands and hurt millions more. Families all across this planet, literally thousands of them, know the weight and struggle of this difficult and confusing disease. If you know someone that is struggling, please talk to them. Encourage them to seek help. To quote my friend Aaron Moore, "We have to balance compassion and honesty." Compassion means you tell them you love them. Honesty means you tell them the truth, even when it's uncomfortable.

Over the last five and a half years, we've learned that recovery is possible, that lives do change for the best, that sobriety is possible. We have learned the power of counseling and treatment and, though it may sound simple, we've learned the power of friendship as well. We all need a support system. We all need other people.

Divided by oceans and borders today, we say that we are one, in all of this together. We are people mourning and people with questions and people in need. We pause to remember lives lost today, the ones in the news and the ones that go much quieter. We mourn the stories that ended too soon and we choose to fight for the ones still going.

Peace to you, today and tonight.

Deborah 'Debz' Barber Casey, don't give up. You are loved and perhaps one day you will see the light that life has to offer again once more. I fully understand what it is like to lose people to substances as well, and other things life throws and yes it is tough but there is also so much good in the world even if much of the time it isn't obvious - people have made me start to believe that. ♥

Very well said - I, too, have seen the effects that substance abuse and addicition can have on all of those around us, and what a horrible, horrible struggle that can be. Indeed, I lost one of my best friends to heroin this year, and have s...een the effects that it and other substances have had on numerous others. RIP to all of those who have also lost their battle with substances, and strength to those who continue to fight against it. And of course, RIP to all of those in Norway during this tragedy - my thoughts are with their loved ones.See More

Susan de Vries The people lost today will never be forgotten. Amy Winehouse was an incredible and special woman and I have never in my whole life seen her as someone who's just addicted. She was more than that and I am incredibly sad that she didn't live longer to show everyone that. All my love to you. x

Rachael, her death is a reminder that no matter what you do, how famous you are, how much money or power you may have, you are not untouchable. We all have our struggles, and those who choose drugs to help cope with the pain, unfortunately,... may suffer the same fate as Amy or countless others. She wasn't the best role model, but maybe her death with inspire someone to take back their life, to carry on and choose living rather than gambling their life away.See More

‎@Casey M. I don't know you, and I've never really dealt with addiction, but I feel a measure of your pain. At the risk of offering "advice" where none's sought, don't think of it as hurting to "let everything go", think of it as letting g...o everything that hurts - these things hurt you, and they hurt those who love and support you. Be courageous and strong. Take it one small step and one small victory at a time. Now you've got someone who doesn't even know you pulling for you. I pray that bomorrow will be a better day for you, my friend.See More

May amy R.I.P., n find comfort, now, and happiness, what she couldn't find here! I had a crack addiction for lil over 3yrs, n I had 2 minor relapse, but thank God, I've been sober for 5 yrs this past june, last month.. I know what addiction ...takes from you, I tried to commit suicide several times, but God wasn't ready for me yet..... Amy was a amazing young woman with incredible talent, she had so much to offer, but her demons they took over, n she got tired... now she can find peace... I was sooo tired, but addiction took everything from me..... even my will to live, finally, God intervened n I went to jail for 6 mos... it gave me time to get my head clear n now, still a day at a time, I'm sober..... Amy I'm sure just wanted to b clean, we all do, but not everyone wants to help, they keep u going, so u can have u supply them... idk what happened n norway..... may they find solice too.... God b with them all, amen.......See More

Julie Manning Waters Whether Amy died of an overdose remains to be seen...But even it was not purposeful, her death had to have been caused in some way by her abuse of drugs and alcohol...You dont' just die at age 27 for no reason.....

To those who are saying that Amy deserved to die or who show disrespect: Sure, you might not like her (you're welcome to your own opinion), but that doesn't make her death any less tragic. (BTW, I've never listened to her music, or given he...r much thought.)

Jamie: Beautifully said. The first paragraph made me cry, which I needed--thank you. I'm definitely sharing this.

Norway: Something like this should never happen anywhere, whether it's in the US, India, Norway, or somewhere else. My heart, thoughts and prayers are with you.See More

Tracy Medberry The truth is that sometimes Bipolar/depression go hand in hand with addiction, when self medicating. Sometimes the thing that fuels creativity can be the very thing that destroys the creative.

I like the part where honesty is encouraged. It's always best to be honest and to tell the truth. Sometimes those are two separate things, and both are always the best policy. There's a saying we have in the rooms, "you can't save your face... and your ass at the same time." Yeah its nice to protect peoples feelings, but really that only applies if it can be done without compromising the urgency or veracity of the message.

If it helps anyone who is wondering if they can get clean or stay clean, I just had 3 years free of substance abuse as of yesterday. It can be done! And meetings are a huge help. Talking to people helps too. Don't keep it inside. We die in isolation.See More

Thank you, actually for writing about Amy Whinehouse. It's sad that people keep saying things to ridicule her life. She may have made mistakes but....who doesn't? I've seen so many people posting things about being happy she's gone...why wo...uld you ever say that about a life being lost? Why would you say that about a heart that should still be beating. It also saddens me about the lives lost in Norway. Seeing that people are capable of doing such tragic and heartbreaking acts is a terrible thing. All of those lives will be forever mourned and I completely feel for their families...including Amy's. This world needs to learn to care and love for one another. That day needs to come soon.See More
