Thunderbolt only supports 8 ports. USB 3.0 supports up to 127 devices in peer-to-peer configuration.

Sure,
but how many USB OTG devices do you know of compared to the
overwhelming majority of host/slave devices? Plus, this was meant to
make PCI-E external. How many PCI-E cards do you need?
