If the goal of my marriage is not to get divorced, then I can do the minimum required, preach covenant to my spouse and probably pressure them into to staying. But if I want a great relationship with my lover, it will require more from me than the enforcing the covenant. The same is true in our Christian walk. If my goal is just to get to heaven or not go to hell, I can accept Christ and stand on the covenant He made with me. But cultivating a deep relationship with someone always requires mutual participation. For example; If I sin and disappoint Jesus, I can probably not ask for forgiveness and still get to heaven. But if my desire is to become friends with God, than that level of relationship will call for me to talk to Him when I disappoint Him. For instance; God knows my needs before I ask but He still wants me to ask. Why? Because He wants relationship with me more than He wants to be some kind of cosmic government welfare program. I can argue, "I don't have to ask, He will still meet my needs". Maybe, but the goal of our salvation was always relationship with God, so why won't I talk to Him about everything that concerns me and expect Him to do the same with me?
